Saturday: plug

We finally changed a plug that hasn't worked well for years.  It's one of those things I should have done a long time ago, but just never got around to it.

Isaac helped.  He got to learn about the fuse box and did several of the wire changes.

I changed the color from almond to white, which looks much better.  Although I'm not sure if it looks better enough to change the other sockets.

Friday part 2

I completely forgot the "excitement" of today.

I was upstairs and Joshua was downstairs.  He started crying.  He had been a bit touchy earlier, so I ignored it.  After a minute Isaac said something, so I hollered down and asked if he could come upstairs.

As he reached the top of the steps, he said that there was a marble stuck in his throat.  First thing I realized: he's still breathing easily so it's serious but not that serious.  But now what?  We packed up and headed to the ER.

About three minutes down the road Joshua said it felt better.  I pulled over and called the phone nurse to see what we should do.  Luckily, we didn't have to go in for an x-ray.  Unluckily, we have to check his poop for a marble.

I think Joshua will have to do the first check for the marble; it sends like a fitting consequence.

Friday

We heard back from Isaac's teacher.  She's one of a pair of teachers that Isaac will have, which makes me feel much better.

Thursday: school of all sorts

Today was the second day of classes.  Students did a better job of keeping masks over their noses, but there were still two (4%) that had a hard time.  While I'd like to think it's getting better, there's also been some ...deserved drama... amongst the faculty about students congregating without masks.  I'd like to be optimistic that we'll be able to finish out the semester, but I realized I don't have a feel for anything other than the few hours I'm there.  Also, the second class was slow again.  I'm going to need a new plan for them.

Isaac and Joshua got their teacher assignments!  It came with a list of supplies to get, which I've been waiting for.  Isaac's class has 29 virtual learners and 10 in-person learners.  What what???  I could understand a *slightly* larger virtual class, but why does a 3rd grade class have 39 students?  I'm concerned but guessing there is a reason, even if I don't like the reason.  We weren't given info like that for Joshua's class.  The good news is that both teachers are at the boys' school.  We were only promised that the teachers would be within the school association, so that was good news.  It would be nice to have a date for picking up supplies from the school since school starts in just over a week, but I suppose one thing at a time.

Wednesday

It was a nice day today, although pretty normal.

We got a bit more of our classroom set up.  Joshua is pretty excited about his desk, although I'm going to add something soft to one of benches yet.  They also got their mice, so those went on the tables right away.  Now it's just too bad that we don't actually know many details about school.  We get several emails that information is coming, but few emails that actually contain information.  I know they're busy and have many more details to consider than I need to worry about, but it's a bit annoying too.

This is Joshua showing me his acid monster pose.

Tuesday: first day of school

 I started work today.

It went better than I was expecting.  All the students were wearing masks, but about 10% of them had a hard time keeping them over their noses.  Of these 10% it ranged from not seeming to care to having the mask bother them and they'd fiddle with it and a few minutes later remember it should be over their nose.

The second class was surprisingly behind though.  The first class ended with about 15 minutes to practice on their own.  In the second class I skipped several things and there was only about five minutes to practice.  I know there were a few more questions in the second class, but I'm usually not that far off between classes.  It was somewhat flustering.

Sunday: guest room

Not much new over here this weekend.  Yesterday we went blueberry picking.  It was near the end of the season and you could tell.  The berries were plentiful, but really small.  We stopped early and I bought a box in addition to the small amount that we picked.  The boys were allowed to play on the playground, so they were happy about that.

Today I starting working on converting the guest room into a school room.  It involved quite a bit of clean up first, as for some reason boxes were getting stacked on top of each other instead of really being put away.  Then I took the bed apart.  The mattress and box spring are just standing against the wall, but it still adds a few feet to the room.  Now to keep it clean until I get the tables in...

Isaac's having a sad time again, but is handling it better this go around.

Wednesday: time

Time flies when your kids aren't around.

In other news, we've gotten two applicants for babysitting while I teach.  One has a slight time conflict so probably wouldn't work quite as well, but the other has no conflict.  While no one has been hired yet, having some applicants has been a huge relief!  There are back-up plans, but they are not as ideal.

Tuesday: school saga, life

Well, Ben and I were on the same page regarding schooling, so the boys will still be in virtual school for at least the first trimester.  I think we both have different "main" reasons, but the end result is still the same.

I cleaned a gutter today.  It was completely blocked.  It's one of those things that if a child had been doing it I would have taken their picture for the blog.  But the kids don't think that way, so there's no picture.

My calf is sore.  It's rather surprising.  We walked several steps up and down yesterday, but I didn't think so many that my muscle would be this sore.  Maybe it's from something else?

Isaac and Joshua are leaving for two days tomorrow.  They're so excited.  Here is Joshua's packing list.  The things with the checks are packed, the others are warnings because they're not packed yet.

Monday: school update

Well, we did get more school information today, as promised.

The new news is that masks are required for all people, regardless of age.  We can change our option around Thanksgiving.  Everything else that they told us I had already assumed would be in place.

We have been given until Wednesday to (re)make our decision.

Thursday and Sunday

Last weekend Joshua drew a book.  We stapled it together, and he read it to several people several times this week.

Isaac helped put up some blinds.

This morning I was greeted by a ghost once I woke up.  The ghost had made a bunch of scary things: slimes, spiders, snakes, and monsters to scare me.

Isaac made some eye monsters.

Saturday: chef

A day or two ago Joshua was SO excited because he had made a special dessert for everyone.  It was the first thing he said to me when I got up from my nap.  It was the first thing he said to Ben when he walked in the door. ...but it was a surprise so I couldn't look in the freezer.

Well, he had put food coloring in water and frozen it.  He paid careful attention to the colors though and tried to give everyone their favorite color.  When we had drunk some of the water, he offered to upgrade it at a later time.  Sure, why not.  I put mine back in the freezer.

The upgrade came today.  He put frosting on top of the ice and refroze it.  He excitedly got them out again at dinner time, although I'll admit mine didn't make it to the table.  I tried a bit later and said the prerequisite, "yum", after which Ben told me the boys thought it tasted a bit funny.

Friday: school

Well, we're (somewhat) signed up for virtual school.  We did not receive any additional information or answers to our questions.  (Although we could probably make a case to change next week if the information that is supposed to come out on Monday changes our minds.)

So I don't love this selection, let's be honest.  I was really, really looking forward to both kids being in school.  The main reasons we went this way include:

1) No masks are required in K-5 classrooms.  This troubles me.

2) While I'm sure they will try to social distance, I've been in those classrooms.  There is not enough room for 6ft apart.  With however far apart they are able to go, I expect the kids will have to sit there most of the time and that's not fun either.

3) I would not be at all surprised if everybody is changed to a remote learning plan at some point.  I feel we have a small leg up with a teacher that was already expecting to teach on-line.  (This could be offset by the kids not seeing their teacher in person, which would be a bonus of in person schooling.)

4) Both kids are ok with virtual schooling.  Isaac's been listening carefully to some of the discussions I've been having and doesn't want to get sick.  While the boys getting sick is actually rather low on my list of reasons to virtual school, Ben and I could get sick and we still don't know the long term effects of the virus if the any of us get sick.  Joshua wants virtual learning because he just likes to stay home.

Now, if you're reading this and chose the other way, that's a good decision too.  Well, maybe I should say that it is an equally bad decision?  I went back and forth so many times and could give you a very similar list for having the boys actually go to school.

Wednesday: annoyed

We got an automated phone call today from the school.  I think it was the principal, although the person never gave her name.  She said that we need to respond to the in-person or virtual learning options by Friday, and then on Monday they can give us more information.

While I understand that it's hard to give information without knowing how many students will fall in either category, I am unimpressed.  Is this the additional information that she said I'd get by the end of the week now moved out to after the deadline?  Many school districts have been given more information along with optional town-hall meetings.  Do they need to have all the answers right now?  No.  Do they need to try harder to get us some answers?  Yes.  Exactly what were they expecting?  That parents wouldn't have questions?  Even if we were given a lot of material parents would still probably have a lot of questions.  They must have some answers, otherwise they wouldn't be able to get us the additional information by Monday.  Can we at least know what you do know??

In other news, a lot of Lego creations were made yesterday and today:

Isaac's blue Lego block that is actually a monster:

Joshua with wings

A control room for Ben and me.  Unfortunately, it only controls electrical things/machines, not people.

We went on a hike at a new place today.

And Joshua, unprompted, put together a food box for the black community (following Black Lives Matter).  I'll drop it off with our other donation box.

Tuesday: well, there's some good news

The good news: I fixed the microwave.  It was still on demo mode from the factory.  (I decided to look at the troubleshooting guide.)  I felt silly for not looking at that first, but I also feel as though the installers should have tested it.

The other news: late Sunday night we finally got some info about the boys' school stuff in the fall.  There was a reasonable amount of information about virtual school.  There was almost no information about in-person schooling, other than your standard procedures (social distancing, masks).  K-5 are not required to wear masks in the classroom, which I find kind of a big deal because there is not enough room to stay 6ft apart, even if they want to.  There was no other information about what the classrooms would look like.  We are supposed to decide by Friday.

I emailed the principal today to ask some questions.  (I'm sure she's overwhelmed.  I get it.)  I got a response back around dinner time saying that later this week more information would be coming out.  However, do the math...later this week probably means Thursday at the earliest.  We are suppose to decide by Friday.  Hopefully the date is modified or they actually get the information to us Wednesday or Thursday.  (Now, there is some flexibility to change before school starts so I need to keep that in mind too.  I'm just not sure it would be super easy to change after Friday.)

This decision is keeping me awake too much.  I think we should do one option, only to think about it and decide it's a dumb option.  So I think we should do the other option, only to think about it and decide it's a dumb option.  So I go back to the original option...

Saturday: puzzle, microwave

I finished a puzzle that I started earlier this week.  It was a good puzzle, but I realized about an hour after I got it out that I didn't really want to use up that much floor/counter space.  I tried to do it quickly.  I also couldn't stop thinking about how much work it was going to be to pack everything back up in the car (and unload afterwards).  Why do they need so much stuff at the beach?

Our new microwave finally was installed today.  It doesn't work.  Apparently they didn't actually test the heating/defrosting function before they left.  It'll probably be two weeks before the maintenance can get out to take a look at it.  (But maybe we'll be lucky.)

Friday: shenanigans

We went for a walk to get some pet food today.  Since we had a lot of pet food to bring back, we brought the stroller.  I was teasing the boys that they should push me, so Isaac finally said, "sure."  I got in and they ran away.

A little bit later Isaac said that he'd actually push me.  So he turned the stroller around and started pushing me back the way we came...until he pushed me into the grass.

On the way home the boys yelled one of the following at the top of their lungs almost the whole time: "wet hei-hei" or "volcano lava monster living chicken nuggets".  I think they were trying to get it stuck in my head.  It didn't really work, but I was rather annoyed by the time we got home.  I didn't stop them though, since it wasn't really hurting anything and they were laughing.

Joshua made a cage for his new dragon.  It has a fire bed, fire to eat, and lava to drink.

He also melted his Popsicle.  I don't know why.

Tuesday: 6 years old

Joshua turned six on Tuesday.  (I'm just a little bit behind in posting.)

He was so excited for his birthday.  Hopefully it lived up to his expectations.  His meal of choice was Froot Loops and pineapple.  We also had a chocolate cake.

At his well child appointment he's in the 15th percentile for weight and 36th percentile for height.  Small, but I'm also surprised lately at how old he's looking lately.

Thursday: butterflies

It was a pretty normal day.  We took a walk around the lake today instead of a hike.  It wasn't really what I wanted to do, but the boys were happy and I got some exercise in.

There were three butterflies around our pink flowers.  I've been watching one butterfly on them on a regular basis, but it was fun to see three.

We got some new blinds today.  They're motorized and have an app so we can schedule them going up and down and it will be so much easier to open and close them for the TV.  The old ones were hard to open.

Wednesday: eventually worked

We went on a hike this morning.  The boys complained the whole time.

We did a puzzle this afternoon.  Everyone was happy.

Monday: friends, classroom

Some friends came over today to play in the lake.  Isaac finally spent a few minutes with them near the end, but Joshua was in a bit of a funk and sat bored on the deck for a while.

I also got to see my classroom for the next semester.  It looks a lot different from the one I've been teaching in.  I'm not sure if it is good or bad or, probably, just different.  I'll get to see the students' faces instead of the back of their heads.

Joshua turned some "glasses" Ben made into a robot head and added a shield and sword.

Joshua

I came out of the bedroom Friday morning to get (second) breakfast ready for the boys, and Joshua is "barely" moving.

A: What's wrong?
J, groaning: I do all the hard work.
A: oh.  Go pick out a yogurt.

*****************
J: ok mom, let's play a game.  [Out of this pile of things, you] tell Joshua what to hide and then Puppy will go find it.
A: uh, ok

He played hide-and-seek with himself for a solid 20 minutes.

*****************
Joshua is currently sleeping on the couch.  I think he's suddenly afraid of spiders in his room.  But I've run the duster in all the corners and there aren't any spiders.  Ben and I are wondering if it's the shadows + rough ceiling + being half awake.  He decided to sleep on the couch tonight and before we knew what was happening, apparently both Ben and I had agreed.

Thursday/Friday

Yesterday we went to visit Aunt Sue and Uncle Lee.  A lot of the things that we normally do with them, including the pool and mini-golf, were closed, but we still had a good time.  We drove around in the golf cart, stopped at all the playgrounds, and had ice cream.

Today was a pretty normal day.  We had some school, we went for a hike, and the boys made an edible experiment.

The goal was to make an edible pinecone because that's what Isaac wanted to make.  I gave them pretty much free range and just left them alone.  They ended up using cookie cutters to cut circles out of fig bars, put nutella on them and stuck chocolate chips and peanuts to them.  They tried using pretzels as sticks to hold them, but I think it was around that time that it all started falling apart.  Apparently it was still yummy though.

interlude

The boys decided to sleep in the tent in the basement tonight.  Joshua came in to tell me and figure out what to get ready.

J: what do we need to get ready?
A: Just get everything you need for bed.
J, yelling to Isaac: all we need is everything we need!

Wednesday: school and Legos

Well, we very tentatively signed the boys up for virtual schooling in the Fall.  We emailed the principal and Isaac's old teacher with some questions, and only Isaac's teacher got back to us.  She thinks that we are not locked into this way of schooling.  While I hope she is correct since they gave us such minimal information, I'm also just a bit worried.  But let's be honest, I'd probably feel this way in either case.

Some of the thoughts that are leading me this way:
*We don't know what in-school learning looks like.  If the students need to sit at their desks most of the day, that isn't ideal.
*There can be serious and lasting side effects of getting the virus, even if you "recover".  How that looks in is unknown, how that looks in children even more so.  (Although also keeping in mind that are also can be no side effects.)

Side thoughts:
*If schools return to virtual learning for all students, we will have less of a disruption
*Recent data about X can be hard to come by.  I've noticed this with a few other things I've tried to Google recently about COVID.  You really need to watch the date: something published a month ago is already susceptible to changes in knowledge.
*I'd really like Isaac to go back to school.  He's driving me nuts.

The cats were looking mischievously at the fridge this morning.  For several minutes.

Isaac made a map out of Legos of Secret Coders for the library reading program.

Joshua made Flurry

Along with a bunch of bad guys.  These bad guys are especially bad because they are mixing types.  (So the middle one is gold + silver.  The Right one is water + something else).  There's also a B for Bad guy.

He also added to his Bad Dragon collection with an ice + water dragon.

Tuesday: hard day

Isaac had a hard day again today.  He didn't want to do his school stuff, and after a half hour of moping around and sort of working on it I sat next to him and he knocked it out in a minute.  We have school because otherwise this summer would be really boring, and it isn't as though there aren't fun things to choose as part of school.  It's frustrating.  And I don't know how much is him being stubborn and how much is dealing with COVID isolation.

We did go to a friends house (outside) today!  There were some trampolines and a fun swing.  Isaac enjoyed it, but maybe not quite as much as I was hoping.  We also took a walk to a nearby playground, which went over a bit better.  In any case, it was something different to do, made school end sooner and lunch start later.  And I had a great time chatting with Amie.

Joshua is still doing fine.  No significant attitude changes, especially now that he has an earlier bedtime.  It's made a huge difference and I haven't heard one word of complaint from him, so I don't know if he doesn't realize that Isaac gets to stay up a little later or if he just doesn't care.

We'll try again tomorrow, although I have even fewer plans than today.

Sunday: birthday party

Joshua had his first (early) birthday party today.

He's starting to look so old.

Saturday, July 18, 2020

Saturday: fruit

Raspberries are starting!  I had one crazy outlier that ripened about two weeks ago, but today there were three.  I saw a few more that will be ready in a few days and lots of blossoms!

We made orange bread this afternoon.  This was one of my favorite foods when I was working at Resthaven, and I hope that this bread lives up to that one.  I was a bit disappointed in the glaze; it was more of a sauce that somewhat soaked in.  I'm sure it's orangy though.

We got a fruit tray from some friends earlier this week and sadly finished it up today.  The fruit was delicious and the fruit dipped in chocolate was even more delicious.  I might need to do that on a more regular basis.

We got an email from the school today asking if we wanted to do in-person learning or virtual learning.  (Hybrid learning is still on the table, but that wasn't an option with this email.)  It has stressed me out because the only detail that we know is that we can change our minds.  But is it easy to change our minds?  School is still five weeks out and just as the school isn't ready to decide anything, neither am I.  What should we default to if we don't want to make up our minds yet?  What does in-person learning look like?  What about virtual?  I expect they're just trying to figure out where people stand, but then they should have asked it differently.  But...hmm...to tie this into the fruit theme...it's been nice not needing to only buy good fruit for lunch boxes the last several months.  In fact, it was nice not to have to pack lunches completely.

Friday, July 17, 2020

Friday: nice day

Today was a pretty nice day.  I think it helped that Aunt C came over to babysit so I could have an eye appointment (and I snuck in a few errands too).  By the time I did that and we walked around the house talking about plant and flower plans, it was 11:20.  The boys were entertaining themselves well, so we skipped having more school.  They didn't complain. :D

Tornado, surprisingly, was the cat that joined me for nap time.  Usually Horizon is the one that comes when you say "nap time", but today Horizon just looked at me blankly and Tornado came.  Horizon was probably exhausted from seeing his second favorite person, Aunt C.

Thursday: the funny things.

1. I learned from a reliable source that there will probably be a butter shortage around the holidays.  Get some extra and throw it in the deep freeze.

2. I had a dream that my foot was getting sprayed by a sprinkler (the ch-ch-ch kind.)  So my feet switched places and then the other one was getting wet.  Turns out a cat was licking them.  Which makes a lot more sense the a sprinkler in bed.

3. For Joshua's math today I had him tell me the two numbers after a number I gave him.  (I've noticed that he always starts counting at one with addition problems, so I want to make the process easier to start at a different number so you can 'skip' counting the first number.)  Anyway, we did a lot of 7-8-9 aughhs! because it kept him engaged in the activity.

4. We went for a walk in a forest.  It had rained early this morning so the forest was damp and wonderful.

5. I have this whole pile to move down the the basement.  It's been growing and growing, but I never want to take the few extra steps to put it in the right place when I'm going downstairs.  It finally hit a tipping point today and I got about half of it down.  The duplo table also got played with for the first time in a while since it moved to a new spot.  Joshua hasn't been playing with it in his room, so I thought we could clear some space and move it to the basement, at least for a bit.

Wednesday: blueberries

We went to pick blueberries today.  We were a little early, so the boys were able to play on the playground.  They did a great job picking blueberries...I was actually rather surprised!  We didn't end up with a ton, but that's ok because we have plenty of fruit in the house.

The boys did my hair.
